Tesco cuts 2000 jobs in supermarket restructuring

Tesco reportedly spoke with the shopworkers union Usdaw about the proposals. Tesco announced that it will close the final meat, fish, and hot deli counters in its large UK stores and reorganise the shop management, which will affect 2,100 jobs.

The largest supermarket in the UK claimed that during the previous two years, it had begun implementing a new management structure in 350 of its smaller superstores and was now expanding this structure throughout its larger superstores and Extra stores.

Tesco will eliminate 1,750 leaders and team managers from its large UK stores and create 1,800 new, lower-paid “shift leader” positions to oversee the daily operations on the shop floor.

The majority of Tesco supermarkets don’t have counters anymore, and beginning on February 26 it will close any that still serve hot delis and meat and fish.

Another 350 jobs will be impacted by additional changes, including the closing of eight supermarket pharmacies, the shifting of midnight shifts in 12 stores, and the shortening of operating hours in some post offices. Additionally, some positions will be eliminated at Tesco’s headquarters in Welwyn Garden City, and the company plans to close its Milton Keynes maintenance national operational centre.

“These are difficult decisions, but they are required to ensure we remain focused on offering value for our customers wherever we can, as well as ensuring that our store offer matches what our customers value the most,” said Jason Tarry, the chief executive of Tesco UK and Ireland.
